As this year ends and next year begins, we will all have many opportunities to see old friends and family. Please remember the responsibility we have to our families, fellow employees and passengers. Super Bowl Sunday is right around the corner, I’m sorry to say this, but some of us have a tendency to over indulge; sometimes old friends will bring up the good old times or we find ourselves in a situation of celebration involving alcohol or drugs. If these situations apply to you please stop and think about your livelihood, a next day drug or alcohol test will have devastating results to you and your family. Alcohol addiction is a disease and covered by sick time, if addicted, Drug use even smoking pot is an offense that will lead to termination. We are only given 5 sick days a year, those days along with your short term disability if you have that benefit will help pay the bills.
Let’s say you smoke a blunt with an old buddy, and test positive the next week on a random test. You will get a call informing you that you’re terminated and must see the company EAP, The appointment is 5 days from now and during this time you’re not getting paid. You make an appointment with EAP management and are told you need 6 weeks of outpatient treatment, 3 times a week for 6 weeks, remember you terminated and now have a $400 a month medical insurance bill because you have to pick up cobra for your insurance, you will be out for 8 weeks at a cost of approx. $12,000 plus $800 and the 20% deductible, let’s say that’s $13,800 in lost wages and costs.
If you are unaware of this the FAA is notified of a DOT positive test, your second positive you lose your A&P certificate. An alcohol positive is just as complicated and be just as costly.
PLEASE STOP AND THINK, If you think there’s a problem then there probably is. Give your union EAP/MAP representative a call for more information.
