Local 591 Presidents Letter AMT Day May 24, 2022

:

To the TWU Local 591 Membership:

On behalf of the Local 591 Executive Board, I would like to wish a Happy AMT Day to all of the AMTs in our Local.  May 24th is a day to celebrate the Aircraft Maintenance Technician profession.  I have always looked at this day as a reminder of the enormous responsibility that comes with being an AMT, and to never lose sight of that responsibility.  A day to recommit to the integrity and professionalism that is required to be an AMT.  A day to remind ourselves that we must work 100% In Accordance With (IAW) the maintenance manuals.  And finally, a day to make sure that no matter how much pressure you are under, that safety and compliance always come before schedule.

This year AMT Day comes with much good news compared to the past two years dealing with the pandemic. Last year I wrote this in a letter to the membership on AMT DAY:  It is our belief at TWU Local 591 that the greatest compliment to AMT Day is fighting for more AMT jobs in this country, employed by the airlines.  As a result of the hard-earned gains in the JCBA, we are once again growing our Membership with several AMTs who are celebrating their very first AMT Day.

This year I am very happy to report that since AMT Day 2021, 540 AMT’s have been hired at American, of which 331 are Members of Local 591.  To those celebrating their first AMT Day, or their first AMT Day at American, welcome to Local 591 and Happy AMT Day. It is not just AMTs who have been hired, inside the Mechanic and Related craft or class, there have been 127 Facilities and GSE Mechanics hired since AMT Day 2021. That’s a total of 667 AMTs, Facilities and GSE Mechanics.

It is also clear that the hiring will continue for quite some time.  This is a direct result of all our efforts in making our message heard during negotiations, that shrinking our workforce by outsourcing our work was unacceptable.  The continual push by senior management in town halls for this Membership to accept the Southwest Airlines Mechanic contract, and the 2.75 Mechanics per an aircraft language, was clearly intended to prevent what we now are witnessing with the hirings taking place. We should all be proud that we collectively said no, and that our profession and our seniority lists are growing as a result.

Finally, this year, and in solidarity with Local 514 and 567, we have purchased AMT Day shirts for all our Members.  On the back of the shirt, it reads “TWU Solidarity on AMT DAY & Every Day.” This message is a simple reminder that our three TWU Locals stand as one now with our efforts with the Association, much like we stood together to force the contractual Scope language that has resulted in the growth of our Membership.

In closing, I do hope you like the shirt and wear it proudly, and once again whether you’re an AMT or not, have a Happy AMT Day!

Fraternally,
