Details:
August was both a busy travel month and a busy working month for me. I attended all five Regions Quarterly Membership meetings. We also had the opportunity to have the West Region Quarterly Membership meetings in SFO this time, with very good participation from the Members in SFO at those meetings. In addition, in the Northeast and Central Regions I also engaged in training with our newer Shop Stewards.
I want to make this a shorter than usual message, and focus on thanking every Shop Steward, not just the newly elected Shop Stewards, for stepping up and tackling what I believe is the most important and under-appreciated Representative position in any Union. Your Shop Stewards are who see first-hand the issues, and interface with management to solve them every day on the Floor. While often Members tend to focus on those elected at the “upper” levels of their Union, it is my opinion that the Shop Steward is the most critical group of Representatives in any Union. Sure, your elected President, various Vice Presidents, E-Board Members, and/or various Coordinators have a wider scope within many Union issues, without the consistent input and effort from the Shop Stewards, as a Union we would not be able to solve many Member issues that often get solved right there on the Floor.
I want to remind us all at every level within our Union that, as Union Members, one of the most critical parts of the mission for every Union Member is to keep in contact with your Shop Stewards, listen to your Shop Stewards when they discuss issues and concerns on the Floor, and to also support your Shop Stewards when they meet with management to work toward solving the workplace issues and problems that often you bring to them to work to solve.
Fraternally
